Playbook: Preface

Welcome

Better Deal for Data Playbook, January 2026

Welcome to the Better Deal for Data (BD4D) Standard and Playbook! This document contains the information you will need to understand the Better Deal for Data Standard, as well as information to help you adopt it in your organization. Let’s provide a brief tour of the Standard and the Playbook.

The core of the Standard is its Declaration and seven Commitments made by an organization adopting the Standard (a “BD4D Adopter”). This captures the essence of BD4D in an accessible way that should be meaningful to the general public, and follows this Welcome. In the next section is the full text of the BD4D Standard, including an Introduction which sets its context, and the Declaration and seven Commitments with explanatory text for each.

The Playbook continues with information that is not part of the Standard but is intended to help guide BD4D Adopters. We start with Sample Use Cases, which are representative examples of data collected and used by social sector organizations, and how BD4D can support those uses. We continue with the Adoption Guide, which provides the steps most BD4D Adopters will take as they implement the Commitments. Next are Snapshots, which look at actual BD4D Adopters and their experiences, starting with Tech Matters’ own Terraso project. And, we conclude with a Glossary to define how BD4D uses certain terminology.

As founder of Tech Matters, I want to particularly thank the small but mighty team that made the Better Deal for Data come into being, especially:

  • M Celine Takatsuno
  • Dr. Katy McKinney-Bock
  • Courtney Tiberio
  • Derek Caelin
  • Amaya Webster
  • Steve Francis

Let’s work together to spark a responsible data movement!

Jim Fruchterman, Founder and CEO, Tech Matters
