Playbook: Acknowledgement

The Tech Matters team expresses our deep appreciation for the hundreds of leaders who inspired, informed, critiqued (always constructively), and encouraged us through the process of co-creating the Better Deal for Data. We particularly want to spotlight the contributions of:

  • Dr. LaKisha Odom of the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, who challenged Steve Francis and Jim Fruchterman to create a “HIPAA for Farmers” that would restore the trust of farmers in data collection for research.
  • Kamau Mbogo, CEO of Imarisha Naivasha in Kenya, who first explained data colonialism to us, and inspired us to decolonize our approach to data.
  • Dorn Cox and the OpenTEAM community, who took a leading role in convening the agricultural data ecosystem to define good data stewardship.
  • The Soil Inventory Project, The Carter Center’s Rosalynn Carter Mental Health and Caregiver Program, Cadasta Foundation, and Opportunity International, our pilot partners whose teams contributed countless hours of real-world testing and feedback.
  • Dr. Stefaan G. Verhulst, Co-Founder of The Governance Lab at New York University and The Data Tank (Brussels), for his time and insights on data governance, social licensing, and data sharing and reuse for the common good.
  • Dr. Sylvie Delacroix, Inaugural Jeff Price Chair in Digital Law at King’s College London, and Director of the Centre for Data Futures, for her leadership on data trusts, data empowerment, and social sustainability.
  • The more than 50 data and nonprofit leaders who joined the Coalition of the Willing for a Better Deal for Data, publicly supporting us on this path.
  • The many nonprofit leaders and practitioners who participated in our Data Consultations, joined our numerous conference sessions, participated in our BD4D Data Madlibs exercises, and took the time for a conversation about data over the years.

Finally, none of this would have been possible without the financial support of a small number of donors who were willing to bet on this risky project, especially:

  • The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation
  • The Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research
  • Schmidt Futures
  • Okta.org
  • Splunk
  • The Skoll Foundation
